I can't make out what they're saying; it sounds like: hiss, blah, she hiss, squeak. But the aunt appears to speak the native language.

About This Quote

This quote is an example of a simple technique for helping children learn a second language. The aunt first speaks to the child in English and introduces the words she wants the child to learn. Then, as she points to things on a display, she uses those words. She may repeat the English words as she says them into the child’s ear, or she may say them quietly as she describes what she sees.

She might even show pictures of those words on a slide projector and point to them with her hands while talking about them in English. The child can simply repeat the word once or twice and then “hear” it in context while hearing both English and the other language at the same time.
